Astoria, Warrenton, and Seaside each host a community celebration of our nation’s Independence Day.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is seeking public comment on a request to exempt from fish passage requirements a proposed culvert at an unnamed tributary to Young’s Bay, which is connected to the Columbia River in Clatsop County. Comments are due by July 14, 2017. This in spite of the fact ODFW has already determined the proposed project really won't impact fish at all.
Georgia-Pacific Wauna Mill on Wednesday (6/21) contributed $20,000 to the Clatsop County Parks Department for use towards the creation of a playground at the new Westport County Park. In 2015, Georgia-Pacific donated 27 acres of property to Clatsop County to be used towards the creation of a park to benefit Westport residents.
Support for the arts and cultural community in Clatsop County shows significant economic return according to a just-released study by the Americans for the Arts organization.
The study estimates the economic impact of arts and culture in communities that agreed to organize data under strict guidelines according to the Oregon Arts Commission. Statewide the study reveals arts and culture jobs in Oregon generated $469.5 million in household income. In Clatsop County, the figure for household income tops $6.7 million to local residents.
As school was winding down for the year this month there were several instances where local schools came under threats from various means that led to several to enact lockdowns. Astoria city councilor Zetty Nemlowill says as a mother of three school-aged children she understands how this impacts parents and suggested that schools need additional protection.
Astoria Police and the Clatsop County Major Crime team are sorting through a complex case involving an assault Monday evening involving several people with a Port Townsend, Washington man stabbed in an area near the Doughboy Monument.
The Astoria City Council mulled over the proposal to impose a three dollar per meter per month parks fee on residential water users last night once again and came away with a different directive to city staff. City Councilor Bruce Jones says there has been a lot of community discussion about that fee proposal and the idea of imposing it on water bills for homeowners and not commercial businesses. In the case of apartments and condos, there may only be one water meter serving the complex missing those apartment dwellers

Kicking a plume of dust into the morning air, a Chevy Tahoe veered off Route 17 South, hit a ditch, rolled and ejected its driver. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Nancy Wilson witnessed the accident as she was headed north on the same highway June 7. Like most mornings, she was on her way to drop her 20-month old daughter Ayla at daycare, then to her job as a storekeeper at Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City in North Carolina.
Clatsop Community College student Alex Lyon has been named a Ford Scholar for 2017. The Ford Family Foundation selected Alex from among 5883 applicants. The prestigious Ford Scholars Program is open to high school seniors and community college students who are ready to transfer to a four-year institution.
Clatsop Community Action Team (CAT) picks up a property in Alderbrook, thanks to the county commission, to possibly use for low-income housing. The property was acquired by the county through tax foreclosure and had been on its way to auction before the board directed staff to withdraw the property from bidding in March and look for other alternatives.
The commissioners also upped the amount they will spend for dispersal to local non-profits when the new fiscal year kicks in next month. The proposed budget was $7500.00. The board voted to bump that figure up to $15,000.
